Deirdre weds Illan, a southern chieftain, and is very pleased at the match. Deirdre blocks out Clodagh from her mind and tells her that they must not communicate mentally anymore, as she is going to a new home and does not want there to be any awkwardness between herself and Illan and realises that she must start thinking for herself if she is to run her own household, as she has always relied on Clodagh too much. She swears that she will never return to Sevenwaters if Aisling dies, and that she would hate the baby if it lived and Aisling didn't.
