Margery appears in the novel when Sorcha first arrives as Harrowfield, and is heavily pregnant. She befriends Sorcha and does not judge her like the other women do. When Margery gives birth, she almost loses her babe and it is thanks to Sorcha that her babe is born.
After her husband John is killed by a boulder while guarding Sorcha, Margery is grief-stricken, but does not show her grief until she is alone. She avoids Sorcha and has her meals in her chambers.
When Sorcha is accused of sorcery, Margery does not defend her because she is too caught up in her grief. She eventually feels remorseful for not standing up for Sorcha when she was first accused.
By the end of the novel, Margery is raising her son alone at Harrowfield.
Three years later, Margery is convinced to travel to Elvington to visit her sister, and takes Johnny with her. In the hills near Elvington her party is ambushed by foreign raiders. Margery hides her son in a cellar, and promises to come back for him when it is safe. She dies leading the raiders away from Johnny's hiding place.
